Global Nomads - Marvels of Nature (Broadcast from Salar de Uyuni)

Students, based on our live videoconference with experts from Bolivia, please discuss/blog on the following topics!

1. Why might the indigenous people living around the Salt Flats of Uyuni have mixed emotions about the increase in tourism to their region?

2. There were several effects from global warming mentioned which are causing climactic changes in the area of the Salar. Discuss one of these effects, and the way it might affect the delicate balance of nature in this fragile ecological zone. Do you think developed nations like the United States play a part in causing/ controlling global warming?

3. Discuss why you would or would not vote for the Salar of Uyuni to be included in the “7 new wonders of the natural world.”

4. Live videoconferencing brings real people around the world together in real time – this may change our impression of a people. How did your ideas about Bolivia change as a result of our conference?

The indigenous people have mixed emotions for the tourism brings good and bad. Increased tourism means increased trafficking which could lead to destruction of the Salar. Though increased tourism brings much needed money.

The indigenous people living around the Salt Flats of Uyuni have mixed emotions about the increase in tourism to their region. This is because some tourists do not respect the rules of the Salt Flats and do not respect the environment at times. All they ask of tourists is to repect the rules of the Salt Flats and do not pollute.

1. From what I have gathered by our video conference with the Bolivian scientists many people like it because the tourism is a source of money. On the other hand, some of the tourists disrespect the land and therefore it also has some down sides.

2. One of the effects of global warming on the region is the reduction of rain in the area. The reason that this is so important is because it is cutting down the the amount of crops that are produced which leads to a shortage of food for the wildlife and the citizens around the Salar. United States and China are the two most industrial countries in the world and I fully believe that these two countries are the leading causes of global warming. There is no limit that either of the countries have putting a limit on greenhouse gases and there won't be until the effects are felt on the catostrophic scale.

3. I would vote for the Salar because it IS one of the seven wonders. Nobody is really sure why it was created, only how. It is this mystery that I believe should make it one of the seven wonders of the world.

4. I had never spoken to ANYONE outside of the United States before and I want to say that it was one of the coolest things we had done in school. I really didn't know what the perception of America was in Bolivia and it surprised me that there was no hostility. The reason for this is because there arn't too many countries that like America. I learned that I kind of the like the Bolivian people and would like to talk with them again some time.

The concern of the indeginous people of Bolivia was how tourism misjudged the environment with trash and disrespect. The Salt Flats of Uyuni are part of the community of Bolivia, and they use and recycle the salt for industrial use.

The effects of global climate was to commit erosion on the edges of the Salt Flats in Bolivia. Loss of rain also have the effects of drying up the flats.

The Salar de Uyuni should be voted for one of the 7 new wonders of the world. Due to the quantity of salt in one large area.
