anonymous, I have checked with the appropriate personnel and they said that early on we had that problem but that it is resolved. I would recommend coming into Heights and getting an updated log on sheet for Excelsior. Thank you for your comment.

why is there only pepperoni pizza in the a la carte line there are are some people that don't eat meat because they are vegetarians, and then there are others who can't eat pepperoni because of their religious belifs and then there are some people who don't like pepperoni. because of religous reasons even taking of the pepperoni isn't enough because the juice from the pepperoni is still left on the pizza it isn't fair for someone to have to wait in the lunch line (which is double sometimes triple the a la carte lines) for most of the lunch period just so that they can get pizza that they can eat and which is most likely the only thing that they want to eat off of the hot lunch tray. it would be very nice of heights to listen to this plea and serve cheese pizza in the a la carte line along with pepperoni thank you, chelsea

Thank you for your comment Chelsea.

Russ,
The first thing you need to do is make sure your student has a physical on file. Next you will need to get in contact with Damon Solomon, the head soccer coach. Coach Solomon's e-mail address is dsolomon@usd259.net he will be able to tell you everything you need to know about what to order and when.

Why don't students like to do school work? They don't like to study or turn in their assigments....Why, why, why????? What part is the student's responsilbility and what part is the teacher's responsibility. If you have an answer, please post it.

My daughter missed many meals at the beginning of school because she couldn't get to her locker to get her ID - seems that after the first week "A" hall was closed. After that, she got better about remembering, but would wait in really long lines, then give up and not eat. I'd like her to take more lunches to school, but she says she can't get to her locker before lunch to get it, and has P.E. beforehand and is not allowed to have any food at all there. Any suggestions as to how she can bring a lunch from home and actually get it for the lunch period?

If your daughter is or was missing lunch she should have come to one of the administrators and we could have helped her. If your daughter needs more than the allotted 5 minutes we would allow that she would just need to ask an administrator. Please tell her that we are here to help her not make life more difficult. I think if we work together we can help kids realize that we are much like you one side of us teaches them to follow the rules and learn about life and the other very much cares for them and their safety.

As a parent and educator I understand the need for the BOE policy that does not allow cell phones in school...BUT...I feel that they should be allowed to use them before and after school as the reason my kid has a cell phone is for me to get in touch with them. Use of a cell phone in class is WRONG...use of a cell phone before 8 am and after 3:10 PM should be RIGHT...how else is my child to contact me? There needs to be some flexibility for the time before and after the actual 8-3:10 school day.

Dear fellow educator,
As you know board policy is board policy and the way to change that is to go before the board and see if you can convince them to change their policies. Reason #1-We as administrators are charged with following policy not changing it nor making arbitrary rules to bypass what the board has laid out for us to follow. Reason #2 if we were to get the board to allow cell phones and kids had them and your child had theirs in their backpack and off but the student next to them had it on and was texting other students during class, what are we to do? We allow them to have them and much like some of the other attractive nuisances out there if they didn't have them they wouldn't have been tempted to use them. I hate to make the comparison but it is much the same principle, pocket knives are useful and a lot of people have them for various reasons but if someone were to get angry and use it to hurt someone it would be our fault that we didn't ban them when we knew that there was a potential for something bad to happen with it. We have a lot of problems with cell phones and they are banned already. People go the bathrooms to call or text people to pass on bad information or to invite people to fight or come up to school to get someone to fight. Kids have even developed the ability to text without looking at the phone much like typing on the computer. We have had to ward off older kids and kids from other schools from coming to school to beat up some of our kids and they were told via text message or by phone call when to come up here. There is even the potential to have drug deals made by the same means. Safety is our #1 priority and if we allow just one more distraction then we are being negligent. I wish we could trust all kids to not use the cell phones in class but we can’t be faced with the dilemma of who can have one and who can't. If you have the need to contact your student we invite you to call the school office and we would be happy to deliver a message.

In the last 3 months, Heights students have had to deal with tragedy. With the suicide of a former AP, and the sudden loss of 3 students, they have faced alot. I only hope that someone there is taking notice and realizing that we need to be there for these kids emotionally. Let's just pray the rest of the year remains tragedy free!!

Of course we are doing things for our kids we love and want to take care of them as we would our own kids. We have had the District Crisis Team here all 4 times and have and continue to invite kids to see their counselors as they need to. We are all hoping and praying that nothing else will happen. Thank you for your concern and please continue to keep us in your thoughts.

Hi. I would like to bring forward something that has been wanted for a while now. Heights High School needs a Powder Puff Football game for the Junior and Senior girls!! Not only would this be a fun activity for the girls to play in a sport that is somewhat similar to what the boys play, but it could bring in money to the school if we lightly charge those willing to watch. There could be consession stands and tshirts.

This could be a new tradition and will last for years at this school.

Thanks for reading!

Im a senior and from past years I think Heights is doing very well. There are way less fights this year and the leaders are cracking down on safety. However I think that walking in the hallways are ridiculous. Students are way to rowdy and don't know how to say excuse me. They don't care who is in around them as long as they are getting through and I think many people can agree with me. Is the absence of being able to stand in the commons the solution. I think so!

Heights Students Rock!!

Blogger Arch said...

Dear Heights Senior, it seems there is room for improvement for good manners and people skills. Students are expected to sit in the cafeteria for several reasons: it makes a large group of students more visible to supervising adults, students have less opportunity and are less proned to confrontation when they are sitting, and supervising adults are able to get to confrontations faster when students are sitting. In the meantime, I urge you to be an example for your peers, and use the school newspaper as a means to express your concerns as well - perhaps in an editorial.

honestly, i ahte the d/f list and sap/it. i'm a senior, and i believe that we have been here four years, and we have earned the right to attend any after school event in which we choose. if i could add something to the d/f rule, it would be to exempt senoirs from the list. it should be a reward to seniors who will be graduating. as for sap/ it. i think it would be better if it was made an actual class like it is at south high where mr. deterding came from. when i went to south my senior year, it was called titan time, and more students actuially went to the classes they needed to. also it was broken into two sessions, which made it easier for students to get to two different tachers on the same day. in addition to that, all students who went to a teacher to get their grade up, they got 10 extra credit points. i belive if the sap/it time was oraganized like it is at south it will be more affective.

Seniors who think they have seniority: Well the D&F list is part of our attenpt to have and maintain high standards. If you have a GPA that is 3.0 or better you shouldn't have anything to worry about. If having seniority should exempt people from things our society would be full of people who think they shouldn't have to do anything because they've done the time and they should have to worry about anything because they've put in the time regardless of the effort they put into something. If we look at your arguement that seniors should be exempt because they've done the time then what about the one's who argue that they should be able to graduate regardless of the amount of credits because they attended school all four years and those that argue that they were in class everyday so they should at least be given a "D" in the class because they at least showed up for school? There are problems with SAP/IT and they are being worked but to say that freshmen aren't given enough time is not totally true. Teachers have always been available before and after school by appointment and during lunch. Student's are not utilizing their available resources. School is a give and take relationship. We give all we can but you have to take the opportunities afforded you in order to be successful. If we give, give, give and there is no effort on their part then it's not a healthy relationship. In high school as you know student's have to be an active part of their educaiton or they won't be successful. Being active means going to the teacher sometimes on your own time to get help.

I have only been able to view grades on the Internet viewer a few times this year. The server is constanly down or there is some other problem that will not let the grades or attendance be displayed. When I have asked at the school I am always being told that it is working fine. I have been using this system for the past several years and have never had this problem before. It makes it very hard to monitor grades and attendance!

HI! My family is moving to your district and my daughter will be a freshman at Heights this fall. I was wondering since we currently live out of town if I could get some general information. We were wondering if there were any upcoming dates for pre-enrollment or visitation that she would be able to tour the school, so she doesn't feel so lost. I also would like some reassurance that she is going to be safe and thrive as a student. We have been reading the blog and am starting to wonder if this is the right place for her. She has attended only small schools, and the idea of her going to a larger one scares me, to be honest. But, I have also found that living in the district she really doesn't have a choice but to attend Heights. I just want to make sure that she is going to find a place and be an actual person, not just a number. Thank you for your time.

I have to disagree with the comment about coming to an administrator to get more time for passing period before lunch. As the mom of a freshmen girl, I have watched her come home all year absolutely starving because she doesn't have enough time. She has also had two (yes 2!!) history books STOLEN because she doesn't have time between classes to get all the way back to her locker and so left her book in someone else's locker. This just seems like a ridiculous situation and when she asked her administrator about it, she was told she should just carry the book with her all day. Come on now. That's just a silly solution.

Dear mom above,
I am a Junior at heights and are daughter, Dont take this the wrong way, is being over dramatic! there are five minutes during passing period. Now if I am able to go to my locker, the restroom, and vending machine during this time, I am sure if your daughter does not mess around and talk to her friends during this time, she will have more than enough time to put her books away. ALso, I leave for lunch everyday, I even go home, play with my dog, mess around. And still have time to eat and do all of this. I dont see in any possible way how your daughter can not have lunch.

having the lunch hour diffrent this year is really not working. The lines are too long for lunch to work the way it is.

Also not alowing the sophmores out to lunch is only incresing the sterotyping of upper and lower class students. It wouldnt be so hard for people to get lunch at school if less people ate there.

8:38 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think lunches should be like last year. Letting upperclassmen out along with the Sophomores and Freshmen is really painstaking, because there's too much crowding to get food on time. Plus, the people that do leave for fast food places at lunch don't have time elsewhere because they get stuck waiting in lines with business people who are on their lunch hour, which happens to be the same as ours.
Please can we do something about this, like let upperclassmen go 5 minutes early like the previous years? It made more sense. That way all of us would get to eat, including those of us who don't leave the school for lunch.

6:34 PM
Blogger WG said...

The student population has increased and yes our lines are a little longer than last year. Howver, there is still enough time to eat. It is unlikely that there will be any changes to the lunch period this year. Our classes are only 47 minutes long. Taking away five minutes of class time adds up to a huge amount of instructional time lost over the school year and that is unacceptable for just mere convenience sake.

why is this high school volleyball coach wearing out his star talent in games and not devoloping his bench for the future? everytime a critical game gets on the line my daughter is to tired to execute because his inability to envssion a deep bench rotatation!
His behavior hurts me as a human being to play these kids to exhaustion, yell at them for being tired and not effectively getting his team to state with the talent he has been blessed with! i have saved this comment post season to not disrupt but to reflect!

5:28 PM
Blogger WG said...

At the varsity level, a coach usually puts the best players on the court. An athlete who has given their all should be exhausted at the end of the competition. Giving your all is what every coach wants from their players and that makes the player a winner despite what the scoreboard reads. The season is short and each game is critical. Development comes at the "C" team or "JV" level. If the game is on the line, then that is not the time to develop a player but that is time a coach will field their best athletes to try to meet that challenge at the varsity level. It is not a lack of vision that certain players were not put into the game at critical times.
It is the goal of every coach to take their team to state. Often, when that goal is not met disappointment and fingerpointing occurs especially when the perception is that the team has "the best talent". The coach does their best in conditioning and training their athletes. However, it is up to the athlete to execute despite how "talented" they may be. Yelling is a component of coaching to help motivate or correct. Yes it may seem harsh at the time, but the volleyball coach has conducted himself in a very respectable manner throughout this season. Thank you for supporting your daughter and the rest of the team this season!

9:07 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

OH MY GOSH!! I just read the response to the parent of the volleyball player..."Yelling is a component of coaching to help motivate or correct." Are you serious? If these coaches cared as much for the classrooms as they did their sports maybe our district would do better academically. I can not believe that it is considered appropriate to YELL at any athlete in our district. These are kids and their education should be more important that their game. And don't use the scholarship line on me...very few of the total athletic talent in USD 259 get scholarships based on their talent. I feel we place to much emphasis on sports and not enough on academics.

2:45 PM
Blogger WG said...

I would love to meet the "whispering" coach. Competing with the noise level at an event, a raised voice(yelling...symantically speaking) is necessary for the athlete to hear the instructions. Your statement is dead wrong about our coaches!! They are teachers first and coaches second and they place their classes before any extracurricular activity. They are all doing an outstanding job. Furthermore, as a district, our scores are tops in the nation when you compare us to other urban districts. It is not correct to compare our district with a suburban district because we have a subgroups that they do not have.
Also your statement about very few of the student-athletes getting scholarships is wrong; that is only true for Division I scholarships which are very limited anyway. We put more emphasis on academics than sports and that is evident in our "Academics First"--weekly grade eligibility check. Grades are at the forefront and we are doing just that.

Nicholas, SAP/IT is a valuable time that has been set aside to allow an opportunity for students to connect with the school through clubs, the advocacy program for Freshmen, receive tutoring during the school day, make-up work in class and if you are part of the football team; an extra opportunity to break down film to prepare for an upcoming game in weights class. Lots of people like this period of the day. The primary complaint is the desire for more time. As with most things in life, "you get what you put into it" Hopefully, you will take a more positive role in utilizing this fantastic opportunity

ok honestly there needs to be more recongnization for people in this school who excel in academics. It is just not fair that the children on the d-f list get more attention than those on the honor roll. There was NO honor roll list posted this last semester and that truely upset me. Let's focus more on rewarding kids who deserve it and less on babying kids who don't try.

8:09 AM
Blogger WG said...

Those on the D/F list are not recognized publicly. Our focus and goal is for all students to graduate and there are those who are not intrinsically motivated who need that extra motivational factor of staying off the list. On the contrary, we are going to publicly recognize those students who have been academically successful. Those students who were on the honor roll will be honored with a certificate and a ice-cream social on January 25th.

For my first year of Heights, i enjoy everything. I really enjoy the positive construction my teachers give me, and the class work i am given. I also enjoy the length of lunch time. I always need a good break, especially with friends. I believe everyone has the right to enjoy high school, and i use that right as much as i can. Although there are some flaws i have observed. Although this is a little hard to prevent, I do not enjoy the mischievous attitude of certain students. Along with other schools that i have been in, the "school paper" never has anything interesting to read. It should have a certain section about a fascinating, teen related, story. There should also be a section where students can also voice there opinion. I doubt my opinions will be listened too. Besides these minor flaws, Heights is very enjoyable.
