Blogging Bears

Students at Hadley Middle School in Wichita, Kansas - USA, sent a teddy bear named Ted Hadley to students in Italy. In return, students in Italy sent their teddy bear (Bea) to students at Hadley. The students will be journaling from the view point of their visiting bears. This exchange will help the students practice their English, as well as learn about a different country and their culture.

My "Other Mother"

November 2, 2008

While I was at Mrs. Higgins' house, her dog Grasshopper took good care of me! Grasshopper is an 11 year old retired racing greyhound who raced 155 races in Florida. After her racing years were over she was used for breeding and had a total of 14 puppies in 4 litters. She is such a good mother that she "mothers" EVERYTHING she can find. Well, as you can see she found me quickly and thought that I needed some mothering. She is so gentle, warm, and furry - much like my own mother, so I felt safe and once again had a good nights sleep.

Bea's Trip to the Zoo

Dear friends,

I went to the zoo in Wichita!! It is called The Sedgwick County Zoo. It was so wonderful to see all the animals there. We had to walk to the zoo from school (about 1.5 miles each way). I was the only one not tired, because Destiney carried me all the way there. We ate lunch at the zoo and had a tour of the veterinary hospital. The veterinarian gave me a little check up and said I was very healthy. (She did mention I could lose a little weight, but you know how I love to eat all this new food.) I am putting some of the pictures of the zoo here, I hope you enjoy seeing them. I really liked being able to see my cousins the black bears. The gorillas and orangutans were very nice too. I also saw penguins, elephants, giraffes, birds, and even some bats! The bats were a little scary but I didn't act scared while we were there.

I hope you enjoy the pictures. And I will be posting my Halloween pictures so you can see me in my costume (and all the candy). I am having a wonderful time here in Wichita. Everyone is so nice to me and the students love to take me home. It is fun to meet new people and get to know them. I wish all you were here with me!

I love you and miss you, Bea

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

November 1, 2008

I went home with Mrs. Higgins this weekend because her kids wanted to show me all about Halloween. Her daughter Trinity (who is 7) couldn't wait to help me find a costume. We talked about all the things I could be - a princess, a movie star, a witch, a ghost, and so much more. I thought the ghost sounded like a lot of fun. Trinity's Grandma found an old sheet that we cut up to fit me. Then, Trinity and her brother Emerson (who is 3 1/2) got dressed up in their costumes. Trinity was a Hollywood Star and Emerson was a police officer. Trinity even made a special carrier for me so that I could go trick-or-treating too. We took pictures on the front steps of Trinity's house, which was all decorated spooky for the night. The jack-o-lanterns were very interesting, Americans sure do funny things with guards! Besides the jack-o-lanterns, the front porch also had fake spider webs, spiders, skulls, and spooky music playing. Then, we were off to get candy! We walked around the neighborhood, going up to each house and ringing the doorbells. When someone opened the door we yelled, "TRICK-OR-TREAT!" Then they put candy in our bags! Mrs. Higgins took us around for awhile, then we went back to our house to rest. We emptied our candy from our bags, and then Mr. Higgins took us out to get more candy! You wouldn't believe how much candy we got - just for saying trick-or-treat and looking cute in our costumes! When the night was over (well, when we got tired of walking around) we went back to the house to sort our candy into piles. Oh, my gosh - my tummy was getting so full of candy I thought I might get sick. I am glad that Trinity told me I had to stop eating candy for the night. Needless to say, I sure slept good that night!

Trick-or-Treat....
