Portal
We have heard from many of you who are using the Portal in creative ways.
1. Share some ways your school is using your Portal.
2. What specific training do you need as a portal designer to futher the use of the Portal in your building?
This blog is for Instructional Technology and the Site Technology Specialists we support.

Our school uses the portal for shared calendars and schedules. This help everyone know where to find a class and have current calendar information quickly.
We are using it to sign up for our laptop cart.
I did a lot of work on the portal page and wondered why no one visited it. Well .... I hadn't added anyone. Can you make this more obvious at trainings for dense people like me?
Also - I feel that it would get more use if I enabled our teachers to publish (not edit). That's my next step.
I envision being able to really do a lot with it once I learn what I'm doing.
Thanks!
I think permissions is the hardest part of the portal - so you are really not dense! ha!
How can you find out if people are visiting your portal?
Portal Statistics
If you are an administrator on your portal, you can easily see the user statistics.
Go to your main portal page, click "site settings", then click "go to site administration." Then click on View site usage data. There is a small drop down arrow right next to Select Report. You can then see who is using your portal by user as well as what pages are most popular. Hope this helps! I just learned how to do this myself.
I would love to initiate a portal for our school, but I have never been able to attend a training due to the need to be present for administering assessments. I have tons of uses.....any idea when another training would be offered?

We use it for the school calendar as well as documents and policies. We have also used it for a survey.
We use it for our building calendar, lab sign-up, and our staff handbook. We also have created a shared workspace for our discipline team to keep their discipline log so that it is always up to date.

WE are using the Portal for a school calendar. I am usually the one who keeps it up to date. I created a site for just the Building Committee. I have posted the agenda when we are working on it there. The secretary of the BC takes notes on the agenda template and creates the minutes quickly. I posted the minutes on our main page. We look forward to learning more about usage. Thanks for the site usage information. I want to get the staff to use it more.
We will have some portal sessions at the STS event on Nov 5th
The usage comment was great. I always wondered about that.
I would love to use it more. I need additional training!! I know very little.
How about using you school portal for posting troubleshooting tips for your teachers. Kind of a place to look before they complain or call you...the STS.

We have put our school calendar, school handbook and documents that teachers need on this. We have also posted recipes that teachers have requested from luncheons just for fun. We have also utilized the survey feature.
We use our portal for staff calendars, sign up sheets, PLC agendas and sign up, and surveys. My staff is getting used to using in now.
I'm excited to offer 2 sessions at the upcoming STS event. We'll cover everything from setting permissions to creating document libraries and calendars. Thanks for all of the great ideas.

We put our master calendar and it is great to be able to link it to our outlook calendar and see them side by side. All our schedules are posted as well as staff handbook and other documents. I also put links teachers use often on it so most the staff have it set as their home page. Links like; e-sis, our school website, kan-ed, united streaming, mlp, subfinder, online library card, catalog, treasures smartboard lessons.
We are using the portal for teachers to sign up when they have a tech need. We are trying to get them use to the calendar online and we created a reading and math spot for them to go to get updated info. Teachers are starting to get use to it. But we are still working on it!!
It is a work in progess! I find that it is hard to keep it updated when there are so many other responsibilites that are expected of us! I really think STS needs to be a full time job at ALL schools.
Like other schools, we put our master calendar on the Portal. We also have critical documents posted on it as well as schedules. We have approx. 40 links teachers use often such as e-sis, our school website, kan-ed, united streaming, mlp, subfinder, etc. To get staff involved in using it, we posted a "seek and find" game that teachers had to play if they wanted to "win" the use of a Palm for the school year.
